If you’ve ever looked at a door specification and wondered what FD30 actually means — you’re not alone. It’s one of the most searched questions in fire safety, and the answer matters a lot more than most people realise. A fire door that isn’t correctly specified isn’t just a compliance headache. It’s a genuine safety risk.

Fire door regulations are complex, and it is easy to see why people are confused about them. They do not reside in a single location. Instead, there are a variety of legislative instruments, many of which refer to other standards. Some of these are not entirely clear, and several changes have been introduced in the last few years, not all of which have been minor.

A fire door that appears to be in working order may not be. The clearance may not be appropriate, the closer may not be functioning properly, or the intumescent strips may not be in good condition. None of these is visible on the surface, yet they are important.

One of the most important safety measures in any building is the fire door. This is the barrier between the fire contained in the room and the rest of the building, providing the time needed for people in the building to escape in the case of a fire.

There is something about a black door that gives it a certain confidence. It does not simply blend into a hallway; it dominates it. Black fire doors have been preferred in the UK for several years, not only because of their design appeal but also because many of them are available as certified FD30 or FD30S to meet the current building regulations.
