Internal Oak Doors FAQs

What is the difference between pre finished and untreated oak internal doors?

The main difference between pre-finished and untreated oak internal doors lies in their surface treatment. Pre-finished oak doors arrive from the factory with a protective finish already applied, which can include varnishes, oils, or stains. This finish not only enhances the natural beauty of the oak but also provides a layer of protection against wear and moisture. As a result, pre-finished doors often have a polished appearance and generally require less on-site work during installation.

In contrast, untreated oak doors come in their raw state and this allows for greater flexibility when it comes to customisation. However, untreated doors may require additional maintenance to protect them from environmental factors and ensure long-term durability.

Can oak internal doors be used as fire doors?

Oak internal doors which are 35mm thick, cannot be used as fire doors.

However, we do stock a wide range of internal fire doors that have all been tested to a 30 minute fire resistance which are 44mm thick for 30 minute Fire Rated and 54mm thick for 60 minutes Fire Rated.

What type of glass can I get in my oak internal doors?

If you're looking to increase the amount of light that's let inside a room, then a glazed door makes for an excellent option. We stock a large number of glass panel doors in a range of styles including clear bevelled and etched glass, and obscure glass. This gives you more control over the amount of light you allow into your room.

What width are the doors that you stock?

We offer a wide choice of door widths so that you can pick the ideal option for your design needs. These sizes are measured in mm and inches and include:

457 mm (18”)
533 mm (21”)
610 mm (24”)
686 mm (27”)
711 mm (28”)
762 mm (30”)
838 mm (33”)
526 mm
626 mm
726 mm
826 mm
926 mm

Some of our doors, for example the Suffolk Essential and Palermo Essential Doors, come in a wide range of off the shelf sizes, making it easier than ever to find the perfect door for your home.

A better solution to your door needs are those with larger 20mm lippings*, as this allows trimming of up to 15mm off each edge of the door, providing the utmost installation flexibility for your installers.

From solid core, deep U-groove design, American white oak, genuine hand matched oak veneers and so much more, we have the widest range on the market of Pre-Finished doors, available with Colours by XL.

If you aren't sure which size is best for you, our team are happy to help out. Our staff have valuable technical knowledge and are ready to lend their expertise to your design queries. Plus, if we don’t have the size that you’re looking for, we also offer a bespoke service on internal oak doors.

So, whether you're renovating a single room, or looking to replace the internal doors of your whole house, we have the perfect collection for you!

What is the difference between Suffolk, Mexicano, Ely, and Belize doors?

The Suffolk, Mexicano, Ely, and Belize doors are some of our most popular doors, and the biggest difference in them comes from the groove and trimming allowance.

With Suffolk doors you can trim up to 15mm off any edge on the standard 35mm thick internal doors, though this is not the case for fire doors.

Belize Doors have a 10mm lipping on the length and a 5mm lipping on the width, so while they are the cheapest of this range, it makes them less suitable for trimming. You can trim off 3mm from the width and 5mm from the length, and the oak groove dimensions are 6mm x 4mm.

With the Mexicano Door there is a 10mm oak lipping top and bottom of the door and the oak groove dimensions are 10mm wide by 7mm deep.

If you're looking for fire doors in one of these ranges, then the Ely Oak Doors are the best option as they have the most allowance for trimming. With standard internal 35mm thick Ely doors you can trim 16mm off any edge. With fire Doors that are 44mm thick you can trim up to 15mm off any edge - though this is rare for a fire door.

Our fire doors are also acoustically tested up to 31db.

What is the difference between oak veneer doors and solid oak doors?

Internal oak veneer doors closely resemble a solid oak door, with the key distinction lying in their composition. Unlike solid oak doors, which are crafted from a single piece of oak, veneer doors feature an engineered solid core. The term 'veneer' refers to the layer that mimics the look of natural wood grain, and often resulting in cost savings. In contrast, solid oak internal doors are precisely cut from solid oak, maintaining the authenticity of the material.
